Eligibility, Registration & Fees

The Alberta Education Act and School Transportation Regulation require us to provide transportation for students who meet certain criteria. Additionally, we have decided to provide transportation for students who meet other criteria. This page explains which students are eligible to receive transportation. Eligibility for transportation to and from a school often depends on the location of a student’s residence relative to the school and the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area. Most schools have a regular attendance area, and some schools have both a regular attendance area and Program of Choice attendance area. A school that offers only Programs of Choice (and no regular education program) has only a Program of Choice attendance area and no regular attendance area.

Kindergarten & Elementary Students

A student enrolled in kindergarten or elementary school (grades 1 to 6) is eligible to receive transportation if the student meets all the following criteria. The student:

  • Is enrolled in the school
  • Resides inside the City of Calgary
  • Resides inside the school’s regular attendance area or Program of Choice attendance area
  • Resides at least a certain distance from the school, as specified in our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule.

Please complete Form 560-1 if your child meets all the criteria above and you wish to apply for transportation. Please hand deliver or email the completed form to your child’s school.

Junior & Senior High School Students

A parent of a student enrolled in junior or senior high school (grades 7 to 12) is eligible to receive a monthly Calgary Transit bus pass rebate if the student and the student’s parent meet all the following criteria. The student:

  • Is enrolled in the school
  • Resides inside the City of Calgary
  • Resides inside the school’s regular attendance area
  • Resides at least a certain distance from the school, as specified in our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule
  • Parent purchases Calgary Transit bus passes directly from Calgary Transit or an authorized vendor.

A parent of a student who is enrolled in a Program of Choice at a junior or senior high school outside the regular attendance area in which the student resides does not qualify for Calgary Transit bus pass rebates.

Please see Calgary Transit Passes for more information about how to apply for a Calgary Transit bus pass rebate.

Students Enrolled in Programs of Choice

A student who is enrolled in a Program of Choice may be eligible to receive transportation. Currently, students enrolled in only the following Programs of Choice are eligible to receive transportation:

  • Elementary School French Immersion
  • Elementary School Spanish Bilingual
  • Elementary School Fine Arts

A student enrolled in a Program of Choice listed above must reside in the applicable Program of Choice attendance area to be eligible to receive transportation.

Students Outside Their Attendance Areas

A student who is enrolled in a school and resides in neither the school’s regular attendance area nor the school’s Program of Choice attendance area is generally not eligible to receive any transportation unless the student’s parent conveys the student to a pre-existing charter bus stop and a seat is available on the charter bus. Please contact your child’s school if you have questions about this option.

Students Outside the City of Calgary

We have entered into an agreement with Rocky View Schools to provide for the transportation of students who reside outside the City of Calgary and are enrolled in a CCSD school in Airdrie, Chestermere or Cochrane. Please contact Rocky View Schools directly to inquire about transportation eligibility for CCSD students who reside outside the City of Calgary.

Diverse Learning Students who Require Specialized Transportation

Please contact your child's school if your child requires specialized transportation.

Fee Schedule

We charge transportation fees in accordance with our annual Fee and Rebate Schedule, which includes the fee amounts and explains eligibility. Parents/guardians have the option to pay transportation fees online. Please contact your child’s school for more information.

Transportation Fee Waiver

A student’s parent who receives GST credit payments from the Canada Revenue Agency may be entitled to a waiver of the annual transportation fees that the parent would otherwise be required to pay. This does not apply to monthly Calgary Transit bus pass rebates. Please contact your child’s principal if you wish to apply for a waiver of a transportation fee.

Transportation Cancellation

If a student’s parent requests to cancel transportation, then we may adjust the amount of the transportation fee depending on the number of complete months that remain in the school year. This may or may not result in a refund depending on what amount, if any, the parent has already paid. Please contact your child’s school if you wish to inquire about cancelling transportation.
